FIRST TIME GUIDE

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Your very first time on the slopes is a special day. We'll share some tips and information so that you can make the best of it. Check out our videos and links that will help you to know what to expect when you head out to Mt. Holly.

SCHEDULE AND BOOK YOUR LESSON

When you decide to take a lesson, you can book your lesson online and then give us a call to schedule your time.

The alternative is to sign up for a lesson when you arrive at the resort. Please keep in mind that there is a limited supply of lessons so first come, first serve.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT MT. HOLLY

When you arrive there are a few things you may need to do before getting out on the slopes:
  • Check in at the Ski School Desk to schedule a lesson (if you have not already booked online and scheduled by phone)
  • Purchase Lift Ticket and complete Rental Form
  • Get Rental Equipment
  • Get Geared Up
  • Meet Instructor at the Ski School Desk
  • Head Out for Fun!

WHAT TO WEAR

Both skiers and snowboarders should wear: one pair of synthetic ski or snowboard socks, long johns or fleece pants with nylon windproof snow pants. A synthetic blend turtleneck or long sleeve shirt with a sweater or fleece over it and a waterproof parka are best.

Gloves or mittens should be waterproof and be able to stand the abuse of a tow rope. Mittens are generally warmer than gloves. New snowboarders should also wear wrist guards.

A hat is better than earmuffs or a headband and we highly encourage everyone to wear a helmet.
If you are wearing a helmet (which we highly recommend), adding a neck warmer will be beneficial for keeping out blowing snow and cold air.

Skiers and Snowboarders should dress in layers so they can shed clothing if they become overheated. This happens often to new snowboarders.

Being properly dressed will make a huge difference in how you experience your time out on the snowy slopes. Arriving early and having your instructor help you to make sure your equipment and gear is fitting properly is another opportunity to make sure you are ready for a great start to the day.  Learn more about dressing kids here.

F.A.Q.s for Beginners

Q. Which is easier, snowboarding or skiing?
A. Skiing is generally easier to learn but harder to master.
A new skier will be stopping and making easy turns on beginner terrain by the end of their first lesson. Snowboarding will usually take a few times out to get the hang of stops and turns, but then progress is quick

Q. Should I take lessons?
A. Yes. Your recreation time is valuable.
A professional ski or snowboard instructor will help you to acquire the skills necessary to have a great day on the slopes. They also instill a lifelong passion for the sport. Kids in the student program are required to take lessons in order to participate in the reduced rate after school program. We feel that they have more fun when they are more skilled at their sport, and more importantly they are safer. Guests who are not in the student program are highly encouraged to take lessons, especially their first time out.

Q. What kinds of equipment should I purchase? Should I purchase skis or a snowboard right away?
A. Only the basics are necessary to start. The items that you can invest in right away would include waterproof snow pants and jacket, hats, and mittens/gloves. If you enjoy snow sports, then your next purchase will likely be goggles and a helmet. Rent your ski and snowboard gear to see what you like before you buy or borrow. Gear needs to fit well, especially boots. Luckily, rentals for skis, snowboards, boots, and poles are available at Mt. Holly. Ski swaps are another great way to find gently used or new equipment, especially for quickly growing children. Check out the Mt. Holly Ski and Snowboard Swap on November 23, 2019.

Q. What is the best way to get started with learning?
A. Consider booking a private lesson first as a one-on-one opportunity to get familiar with your equipment and the new sensations of being out on the snow before you move into a group lesson. You will receive undivided attention in your private lesson which ensures a positive first experience. Make sure you have a clear understanding about your next steps once your lesson is done and have fun practicing!

Picture of a tall and happy snowman standing near the trail map outside at the Mt. Holly Ski and Snowboard Resort. The trail map is used by guests to determine which areas they want to visit by level of difficulty. The snowman is made of snow, is wearing a scarf, and has arms made of branches that appear to be holding ski poles. He is wearing a small black hat. It is snowing and there are pine trees in the background. The image is joyful and fun.
